Dwell Illustrations

I have these 4 illustrations in the new April issue of Dwell Magazine, which should be out on newsstands in a few days. The article deals with the history and future of manufacturing. The art director let me get a little more experimental with these concepts, perhaps to help liven up the subject matter a bit. The added leeway made these illustrations a lot of fun to work on. (Thanks Brendan!)

New Death & Co. Menu

My wife and I updated the Death & Co. menu about a week ago. I made 8 new illustrations and created the category titles, inspired by old Stock Certificate lettering. The general design is mostly similar to before, but Kate had to change out all of the food and drink items with new stuff, rearrange some sections, and add in more quotes. It's head bartender Brian Miller's first menu, and I can't wait to try out some of their new concoctions. They have a new chef now, too, so the small-plates are all new... and sound rather tasty.

Key Arena Illustrations

These are the illustrations I did in December for the Key Arena in the Seattle Center. The concepts were conceived and approved before I even got involved, so I was basically executing existing ideas. They printed as large banners for a section of the arena that seems to be a KeyBank-branded sort of lounge area. Not sure if they actually serve any sort of refreshments there, but there are stools & tables as well as banking kiosks. If I make it to Seattle any time soon, I'll have to investigate it further. It would be interesting to see if you can actually mix some beer drinking with your banking.. seems pretty obvious that the two should go together!

They also used the campaign ads I made for mags and billboards around the perimeter of the lounge area. And they even used the wallpaper pattern I created for the TV spots on some portions of the walls, which is kind of cool. Check out some pics below that Key Bank sent to me:

Death & Co. Menu Illustrations

I worked on this menu for Death & Co. last June with my wife, Kate. She did the page design while I created the spot illustrations and the cover crest. It was a super fun project.. working with Kate and our friend Dave Kaplan, the owner. Plus it has given us more of a reason to go in there more often. Not that we really need more of a reason, since the food and the drinks are impeccable. If you still haven't gone, GO!! jeez..

Since I was pretty busy at the time, I needed to recycle a couple of the illustrations that I made for D&C for their cocktail catering (see the post). The actual menu has changed a bit since this Summer menu, but the general design is the same. You can download the latest menu here.

p.s. those are rye sprigs in the cover crest. rye whiskey is yummy.

Men's Journal & Update

I know I haven't posted in about a month. But it's not for lack of work.. quite the opposite. I'm not sure if I've ever been quite this busy. I landed a big ad campaign for Key Bank, which has me creating all of the artwork for 5 different TV spots as well as the artwork for print ads and billboards / bus stops. The artwork for the spots will be animated by a motion graphics team. And all of this work will need to be finished by mid-August. More on this job later..
So in addition to starting this job, I managed to create a portrait of Morgan Freeman (above, on stands now) and Dennis Hopper (next month's issue), another 2 portraits for Spirit Magazine (will post those later), and about 10 icons for Death & Co.'s new menu.
Also out this month, a couple illos I did for Runner's World in early May. I'll post those later too...

Death & Co. cocktail drawings

I made these drawings for the bar Death & Co. to illustrate some of the specialty drinks they offer for their catering service. The drawings, along with recipes, were letterpress-printed onto cards for their cocktail catering launch party, as well as used on their website (click "Death & Co. Catering). If you find yourself in New York with an appreciation for refined cocktails, make it an urgent goal to try Death & Co. They truly have the best drinks in the city (sorry, no vodka drinks), and pretty amazing food as well.

Here are the names of the above cocktails:
*Elder Fashion
*French 75
*Rum Rum Mule
*Fresa Brava
*Mothers Ruin Punch
*Rye King Fizz

Illustration Friday - "Multiple"

Didn't have time to make a new piece for Illustration Friday this week, but had this drawing that seems to fit. It's my "Gemini" in a series of custom zodiac symbols I've been making. You can check them out here.

Zodiac Signs

I was commissioned by Bell'Invito to illustrate all 12 Zodiac signs for a calendar, which will be letter-pressed. The creative director gave me the freedom to make them a bit quirkier than the traditional take on the Zodiac signs, so it's been fun coming up with the different concepts. Some are a bit more obvious than others..
I'll likely finish up the last 4 over the next couple weeks, and will post them up when I do.
